HostGator is founded in October 2002 by Brent Oxley, then a student at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida. The company starts out in a college dorm with a simple vision: offer affordable, reliable web hosting. By February 2003, the platform hits 100 customers, quickly passing the 1,000 mark. The current legal entity is HostGator.com, LLC.

Growth is explosive. In 2006, HostGator moves its headquarters into a roughly 1.860 m² building in Houston, Texas. In 2008, Inc. Magazine ranks HostGator #21 on its list of the fastest-growing companies in the US and #1 in the Houston metro area. The company mascot, the alligator “Snappy,” becomes a recognizable symbol in the industry.

On July 13, 2012, Brent Oxley sells HostGator to Endurance International Group (EIG) for $299.8 million, including $227.3 million paid in cash. This acquisition brings HostGator into a huge portfolio of web hosting brands, alongside Bluehost, iPage, and dozens of other companies.

In February 2021, EIG is acquired by Clearlake Capital and merged with Web.com, forming Newfold Digital, Inc., headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida. The new conglomerate runs brands like HostGator, Bluehost, Network Solutions, Register.com, CrazyDomains, and Web.com, with over 4,500 employees worldwide.

HostGator’s infrastructure runs on Tier 3 data centers in Houston (Texas), Provo (Utah), and Atlanta (Georgia), with extra facilities in Mumbai and Hyderabad (India), Singapore, and São Paulo (Brazil) for international customers. Network redundancy with multiple bandwidth providers backs the 99.9% uptime guarantee.

Service lineup includes: shared hosting (from $2,29/month), managed WordPress hosting (from $7,95/month), Snappy series VPS hosting with NVMe storage (from $34,99/month), dedicated servers (from $109,97/month), and professional email via Titan (from $2,99/month per user). This variety lets customers scale without switching Provider.

The tech stack uses CentOS 7 and AlmaLinux 9 operating systems, the cPanel control panel, Apache web server, PHP 8.1-8.3, MySQL databases, and SSD/NVMe storage. WordPress plans include Cloudflare CDN integration, and app installs run through Softaculous with 400+ scripts available.

The 99.9% uptime guarantee is backed by a generous SLA: if uptime drops below the threshold in a calendar month, HostGator credits the entire month of service. Tech support is available 24/7/365 via live chat, phone (866-964-2867), and email.

Pricing strategy is built around an aggressive promo model: intro prices are very competitive, but renewal is a lot more expensive (ex: $2,29 → $10,99/month for shared). With over 8 million hosted domains, HostGator stays one of the biggest hosting providers in the world.

Right now, HostGator operates under the Newfold Digital umbrella, and keeps modernizing its lineup with NVMe storage for VPS, Cloudflare CDN integration, and an upgrade to AlmaLinux 9. Even though it no longer offers reseller hosting for new customers, the portfolio covers most users’ needs, from personal blogs to enterprise apps on dedicated servers.
